Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a large contract from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) to build 156 kilometers of high-speed track for India’s Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project.
The order, part of Package T1, covers the design, supply, construction, testing, and commissioning of ballastless tracks between Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex and Zaroli village in Gujarat. The work includes 21 km of underground track and 135 km on elevated viaducts.
This is L&T’s second major track-work order in the project. In 2022, the company was awarded Package T3 (116 km) from Vadodara to Sabarmati depot, which is already under progress. With the latest win, L&T will now handle over half of the total track works for the country’s first bullet train corridor.
The project will use advanced Japanese Shinkansen J Slab Track technology, enabling trains to run at speeds of up to 320 kmph, ensuring smoother rides, longer service life, and easier maintenance.
Speaking about the achievement, S.V. Desai, Whole-time Director & Sr EVP (Civil Infrastructure) at L&T, said:
“Our success in the T3 package came from quickly adopting new technology, indigenising equipment, and applying value engineering. We’re confident of delivering this project on time as well.”
L&T is considered India’s leading expert in ballastless track systems. The company has worked on several metro rail projects in Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, and even Jakarta, making it a key player in modern urban transit development.
With a business presence across engineering, construction, hi-tech manufacturing, and services, L&T is a USD 30 billion multinational with eight decades of industry leadership.
